Want to Throw Like a Pro? Start with the Basics.

Axe throwing isn’t just about strength—it’s about control, rhythm, and technique. Whether you’re brand new to the lanes or looking to tighten your skills, the Axe‑Mania crew has your back. We’ve seen thousands of throws (and a few accidental bounces), so we know what works and what doesn’t.

If you’re looking to impress your friends or climb the leaderboard, these five tips will give you a solid foundation—and a better shot at that bullseye.

1. Relax Your Grip — It’s Not a Hammer

New throwers often grip the axe like they’re about to pound a nail into a board. That tight grip actually works against you. A relaxed hold allows the axe to release cleanly from your hand and spin smoothly through the air. Think of it like tossing a dart, not swinging a sledgehammer.

2. Step Forward and Follow Through

Your body plays just as much of a role as your arm. Take a comfortable step forward as you throw, and allow your arm to follow through naturally toward the target. That motion helps guide your aim and gives your throw momentum without overmuscling it. You’re going for accuracy, not brute force.

3. Watch Your Rotation

One of the biggest mistakes new throwers make is not paying attention to axe rotation. Too many spins or too few can cause the axe to bounce off the target. For most people, a standard one-spin throw works best. Our lanes are designed with that in mind, and once you find the right release point, you’ll start hearing that satisfying thunk more often.

4. Align Your Stance with the Target

Your body’s positioning matters more than you think. Align your dominant shoulder and foot with the center of the target. That helps your entire motion stay on track—from your wind-up to the release. Stay balanced, stay steady, and you’ll see improvement quickly.

5. Don’t Be Shy—Ask Our Coaches

At Axe‑Mania, you’re never on your own. Our coaches are always on-site and ready to help. Whether you’re struggling to land a stick or trying to fine-tune your technique, don’t hesitate to ask. A quick pointer from an experienced thrower can completely change your game.

Practice, Adjust, and Have Fun

At the end of the day, axe throwing is about having fun—and you’ll have a lot more of it when you start landing throws more consistently. These tips are a great place to start, but every thrower is a little different. Don’t be afraid to experiment, adjust your technique, and most importantly, keep practicing.

And remember: nobody becomes a pro overnight. But show up, throw with intention, and before long, you’ll be the one handing out tips to the next newcomer.

Every great venue has a mascot—but not every mascot has a story like Axel’s. If you’ve visited Axe‑Mania, you’ve definitely seen him.
